Course Overview

When a person becomes overheated because of high temperatures, heat stress can have serious and even fatal consequences. This safety training course shows office and facilities personnel in healthcare how heat stresses the body and describes different heat-related illnesses.

Viewers learn that our body has a natural cooling process to keep us from becoming overheated. But in environments where the heat is extreme, our natural cooling process can break down. As a result, heat-related illnesses such as heat syncope, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can develop.

Heat exhaustion occurs when our body runs low on fluids and electrolytes. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include intense thirst, confusion, dizziness, weakness, and lack of coordination. Heat stroke is the most severe heat-related illness and occurs when the body’s cooling system stops working. The symptoms include an inability to sweat, hot skin that is dry, headache, rapid heartbeat, nausea, and vomiting.

This course explains what to do for someone who is overheated and teaches practical ways to stay cool in a hot environment. Use this safety training course to learn how to protect yourself and others in high heat conditions.
