Course Overview
Prevention of stormwater runoff pollution is good environmental practice, as well as the law. This step-by-step training video shows municipal workers the proper ways to ensure those laws are followed and the environment is protected. Municipal Storm Sewer System operators, or MS4s, are the frontline in the fight against stormwater pollution, and it is vital they set the example for other workers with proper pollution prevention techniques.
The video informs MS4s of the basic best management practices, or BMPs, to ensure, when faced with potentially hazardous situations, they are prepared with the knowledge and habits to avoid contamination. The BMPs cover tasks such as basic housekeeping, spill prevention, vehicle fueling, equipment maintenance and washing, and material and waste management to ensure every MS4 position and its duties are represented.
The program shows workers how it is their lawful duty to follow these procedures and how actions such as illicit dumping can be punishable by strict fines. It also shows workers the larger reason for these laws: the environment, wildlife and future generations, further reinforcing the need to maintain unpolluted stormwater runoff.
