As employee turnover and low retention rates remain an issue in businesses, how can your recruitment efforts make a difference?

Take a look at your employment screening and hiring process before beginning a new search.

Take a look at your employment screening and hiring process before beginning a new search.

According to a recent study conducted by PeopleMatter, a workforce management platform for service-industry brands, 70 percent of professionals surveyed said they struggle with identifying top candidates for their business.
In addition, three out of five professionals are dissatisfied with applicant quality and 67 percent said they need more applicants than they receive.
The survey also found that turnover remains the biggest challenge, with many reporting annual turnover rates a little under 50 percent, costing almost $5,000 per worker.
High retention rates and employee engagement begins during the hiring and on boarding process. Keep the following three tips in mind during recruitment:

  • Be sure job descriptions are accurate: Before posting a newly opened position, be sure all of its expectations and requirements are covered in its description. Having an incomplete or inaccurate description will attract the wrong candidates from the beginning of the process.
  • Continue training effectively: Training should never stop after an employee undergoes the on boarding process. Instead continue development and engagement with skills classes, advanced learning sessions and training on OSHA safety requirements. Continuing training after an employee is hired displays a sense of trust and instills in the employee that a business wants to see their success in the future and now.
  • Don’t just decide based on a resume: There are many different factors that should be considered before hiring an employee. Although a resume, as well as a cover letter, are a great way to get to know a candidate, it doesn’t have to be the only way. Schedule a phone interview and an in-person interview to screen clients. Take the time to call references and implement tests related to the work before making any decisions.
