Diversity in the workplace
According to a recent study conducted by Deloitte and the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative (BJKLI), millennials couldn’t agree more.
The study found that 71 percent of millennials view cognitive diversity, the blending of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives within a team, as a way to achieve business goals. They also believe it fosters teamwork and overall innovation.
The study also revealed that engaging in diverse work practices also strengthens employee engagement. Eighty-three percent of millennials said they felt more engaged in an inclusive work culture.
In contrast, their older counterparts view diversity as a legal necessity or a moral force to be reckoned with, regardless of whether it benefits the business.
Implementing diversity standards in the workplace has more benefits than one.
- An increase in adaptability: Accompanied with sensitivity training and overall employee development, workplace diversity can increase adaptability between workers and customers. If a specific range of customers needs help, maintaining a diverse workforce can be the best way to find a solution.
- Better conflict resolution: Diversity can bring a range of viewpoints when it comes to conflict resolution. Management practices benefit from a wide range of approaches to resolving conflict using different means.
- Broad range of service and appeal: Employing a diverse workforce will also attract a wide customer base and service. Bringing together workers from different backgrounds not only shows your business open to various cultures and opinions; it also proves it can cater to a range of needs and possibilities.
- Vast collaboration opportunity: Hiring workers from all backgrounds will enable your company to create a workforce with the best available pool of talent possible. Communication and collaboration are often cited as two of the most important facets of a workplace.
