Logitech Announces New Webcam for HDTVs

Logitech announced a new webcam for the Panasonic VIERA HDTV, which enables users to make Skype video calls from their television without an attached computer.

With an internet connection you are able to make calls to any other webcam-enable HDTV. You will also be able to call anyone using Skype on a PC or Mac, as well as anyone with a smart phone enabled for Skype.

The camera should retail for around $150- keeping in mind this is currently only compatible with the Panasonic VIERA HDTV.

As you may know we currently have a Logitech C910 webcam hooked up to an HDTV, which is connected to a PC. For our purposes the HDTV, provides a “large monitor” for our conference room, allowing us to use the computer in meetings. As our needs are not limited to Skype this is not something appropriate for this setting.

The new TV webcam seems as though it would be perfect for personal use- instead of having to connect a computer you your HDTV you could have Skype video calls via a direct internet connection to the television.

I wonder if people would consider using Skype video-calling through their HD television in lieu of keeping a regular land-line telephone. Would you consider using this technology in your home?
